1. Pyramid Principle (Bottom-Up Approach)
- Use Case: Persuasive communication, problem-solving, structured reasoning.
- Structure:
- Base: Start with foundational data, analysis, or supporting details.
- Middle: Derive key insights or themes from the details.
- Top: Conclude with the main recommendation or takeaway.
- Example: When making a strategic proposal, first present research and supporting arguments before leading to the final recommendation.
2. Inverted Pyramid (Top-Down Approach)
- Use Case: Quick consumption, executive summaries, documentation.
- Structure:
- Top: Start with the main idea, key insight, or conclusion.
- Middle: Provide essential supporting details.
- Base: Offer in-depth data, references, or context if needed.
- Example: When writing an update to leadership, start with the key decision or status update, followed by supporting details.
Implementation in PM Work
- Use Inverted Pyramid for executive communication, emails, PRDs, and release notes.
- Use Pyramid Principle for deep-dive analyses, problem-solving discussions, and justifying strategic decisions.
- Adapt based on the audience—busy stakeholders prefer concise top-down insights, while technical teams may need structured reasoning.
